DROPOUT CRISIS EQUALS SOCIETAL CRISIS

New York City has more out of school and out of work young adults than any other city in the country. The number of dropouts in NYC continues to increase. Students who quit school don?t just suddenly drop out. Typically it begins in the ninth grade and sometimes earlier. About 1out of 3 high school student, quit school. Among minorities? students, the numbers are closer to 50%. In addition, many students are being improperly pushed out of high school. Many parents are unaware that their children have the right to attend school until the age of 21. Obtaining a high school diploma affects the life chances of today?s youths.
Many students dropout because of the cumulative effects of many negative experiences such as:

          ? living in poverty
? growing up in a dysfunctional family environment
? lack of positive role models
          ? drug or alcohol abuse
          ? poor grades
          ? poor behavior
          ? truancy
          ? Alienation from school.

There are many other factors why students drop out of high school, many lack credits to graduate on time, some are aging out, overcrowdings and the list goes on. Some of these factors are associated with school themselves. But being school-related does not mean they are school-caused. This makes the district's efforts to serve at-risk students all the more challenging.
It has been known for many years that young people who do not complete high school face many more problems in later life than people who do graduate. Student nonattendance is a problem that extends much further than the school. It affects the student, the family, and the
community.

Absenteeism is damaging to students' achievement, promotion, graduation, self-esteem, and employment potential. Clearly, students who miss school fall behind their peers in the classroom. This, in turn, leads to low self-esteem and increases the likelihood that at-risk students will drop out of school.

Dropout rates are related to a variety of individual and family demographic and socioeconomic characteristics. Dropout rates are higher for students from low socioeconomic backgrounds, single-parent families, and non-English family backgrounds. Students whose parents or siblings were dropouts are themselves more likely to drop out. The same is true for those who marry and have children before graduating from high school. Undeniably, for many dropouts, these conditions were a part of their lives long before high school.
Furthermore, the rate of engagement in high-risk behaviors such as premature sexual activity, early pregnancy, delinquency, crime, violence, alcohol and drug abuse, and suicide has been found to be significantly higher among dropouts. As the number of dropouts continues to grow, employment opportunities for them are more limited. Today's
economy requires of the labor force increased literacy, more education, enhanced technological skills, and lifelong learning.
It is apparent that both school and personal factors play a part in student dropping out of school. The four main reasons are lack of parental support, financial difficulty, individual choices and affect of drugs and alcohol on the students.

High school dropouts are less likely to contribute to the economy through paying taxes, and instead its costing taxpayers money through their need for support through public assistance, subsidized housing, and other programs. Youth who drop out of high school are at very high risk of long-term disconnection with the labor force. They experience long periods of unemployment. These youths need access to high quality alternative education and training opportunities to equip them to compete in today's labor market.

Dropouts tended to believe that they don't have control over their lives, and that something always seemed to stop them from getting ahead. Despite leaving school, most dropouts recognized that they need further education. Further, the career aspirations of many dropouts are high, although some are currently holding low-skill, low-paying, and possibly dead-end jobs, but they do not believe that they were sacrificing their futures when they dropped out.

Cosmetic Nose Surgery

"To lead by the nose", "To snatch something from under someone?s nose" and many more idioms have one thing common in them ? the nose! The nose is a very important part of the human visage. Apart from its functionality, it is highly significant from the cosmetic viewpoint too. The nose enhances the beauty of the face. Without the nose, everything else on the face would seem to be quite incongruous and out of place (Lord Voldemort, anyone?). When deciding facial beauty, artists often take the nose as the reference point of building all other proportions.

Cosmetic nose surgery is medically known as Rhinoplasty where ?Rhino? refers to the nose and ?Plasty? is repairing or modifying. Rhinoplasty is a procedure that is performed on the human nose to reshape it either by reducing or increasing the size of nose?s various components. A plastic surgeon may remove a lump and/or can change a shape of the nasal bridge and may adjust the width of nostrils along with changing the angle between the upper lip and the nose. Rhinoplasty can also be conjoined with many other cosmetic surgery such as forehead lift, facelift, breast augmentations etc. The cosmetic surgery centers may have different offers for those surgeries that have discounted rates.

Rhinoplasty is not a single procedure but it is a group of surgeries that are selected depending upon the anatomy and preference of the person. A doctor and the patient decide about the shape of the nose that is to be achieved and based on that, the re-construction or rebuilding is performed. The structures that are generally being modified include nasal bones, bridge or septum, cartilages, skin and/or restoring the nostrils. The incisions are made outside but there is much of the work to be performed even inside the nose.

Cosmetic nose surgery is performed under general anesthesia or local anesthesia with sedation depending upon the type of work to be performed. The operation is not a major one and does not require much time (generally 1-2 hours). However, if it is complex surgery, it may go beyond the timeframe. The recovery period is quite short as compared to other major surgeries; however, on the initial stage, one may find difficulty in breathing but that is quite ephemeral. Sutures and splits are generally removed at the first visit that would be after one week of the surgery. There might be swelling and bruising, which is quite normal and goes off over the times.

Rhinoplasty can make your shorter nose longer and the longer one a shorter; larger nose smaller and smaller larger, wider a thinner and thinner a wider. Underlying cartilages and bones are reshaped and modified in their positioning to get a better look. During the entire surgery, the nasal tract (the passage through what we breathe) is handled carefully in order to recover a normal breathing after the surgery. Post-operative care and medications are advised to the patient and utmost care is to be taken to prevent any nasal infection.

Climbing Plants - One Way of Decorating the Garden

No matter what size of garden you have, climbing plants will help you show it off to its best advantage.  Whether you are training them to grow across empty spaces, or making the most of a small garden by having them grow up a trellis, climbing plants can make your garden look full of color in no time.

For flowering climbing plants you can't go far wrong with a clementis.  The clementis comes in a variety of colors and put together can create the most beautiful display by the middle of summer.  It grows quite fast so even the year you plant it should have a lovely show of flowers. One of the most fragrant of the climbing plants, and one that's popular with gardeners is the star jasmine - with its white flowers contrasting against its dark green wax-like leaves and a distinguishable perfume scent that's lovely on a summer's evening, this is a must for those who are planting out a more traditional garden.

Ivy is a versatile climbing plant that is almost tenacious in its attempt to take over the entire garden!  Although just a green plant, it comes in a number of different varieties with various shades of green, some of them with two tone leaves, and some single toned.  Ivy is a hardy plant and it has a will to survive so even the most amateur gardener can put this in their garden and it should thrive and grow.

If you don't have a fence for your climbing plants to wind their way up and around, considering putting up a trellis against your house, or somewhere near a tree in the garden.   If you have any garden ornamentation such as a fountain or birdbath, these can look enchanting with swirls of ivy growing around them.

Climbing plants are quite hardy and as long as you keep them nourished and well watered, they will climb and flower year after year.  Just remember to trim them back once in a while or they'll start to get out of hand - with ivy especially, there can be too much of a good thing!

What to have on your site to generate traffic

Nowadays we meet many webmasters that are trying to find different ways to increase traffic. Of course, there are already some methods for doing this that have been discovered some years ago, but what is needed is a more powerful method to attract even more visitors than before with less work.

Companies that really have a success on the online market not only that they have good offers for the potential buyers, but they also have different stuff that are meant to attract visitors even if not with the intention of buying. For example they have sites that are meant to enjoy the visitor and to amuse him. After all, you never know if he is going to be impressed of your offers and will end by buying something.

A very good method to make others know about your site is to attach a tell a friend script. This will be available for any visitor and if he wants to, he can choose to tell a friend or someone he knows about the site. If someone accesses your site and he is satisfied with the offers, he might want to announce other persons to, but he could think that it is a waste of time or he could forget. But by installing a tell a friend script, he will immediately announce others, as he will not forget because it is made immediately as he visits it and it will not waste his time as is only takes a few seconds.

Finding and installing a tell a friend script is something extremely simple to do. For installing it, you simply have to copy and paste and put it on the desired page. If you are looking for such a script you will be surprised how easy it to find it. You just have to access a search engine ad write in the search box "tell a friend script" and the results will appear on the page.

Yet, you have to be patient with this method of attracting visitors as it is not as efficient as it is the paid advertise. But why not using it next to the advertise? Of course, if you don not have, money to invest, you could simply use the script.

Laughter: The Perfect Exercise

Did you ever consider that laughter could be a perfect exercise for your organism? For the beginning, let's think about laughter as at a form of aerobic. If you laugh, you will start giving your diaphragm workout and you will also be able to use more oxygen. If you laugh from all your heart it is like you would do jogging, but just for the inside of your body. This is a good exercise and even better than any other if you can not afford or you are not allowed doing other types of exercise. Laugh does many thing at a time, like relaxing some muscles that you aren't using while laughing, improving your respiratory system and many more. Also, the lungs receive more air and they get to the result of a cleansing. If you went to a doctor and he prescribed you a diet and some exercise, you can add by your own initiative a laughter program and the results will come faster.

Of course, it can not replace the diet and exercise but it will be of a lot of help doing a lot for your organism. It is said that laughter reduces blood sugar, but not even the researchers can tell why. On of the options would be that of forcing the abdominal muscles to use more energy or to affect the system and so, it reduces the level of sugar that your blood contains. There have been made some tests that proved that both for diabetics and non diabetics, the level of sugar in their blood is higher after reading something, but it is lower after a good dose of laugh.

As written above, you have to understand that laughter will never replace physical exercise but it can easily be done as another type of exercise next to the physical one. Imagine when it is cold and cloudy outside, when it is raining, or as well when it is too hot for making exercise, than you need some laughter.

Unusual and interesting Pets

Invertebrates are still more popular pets. The group includes 97% of all animal species ? all animals except those in the Chordate subphylum Vertebrata (fish, reptiles, amphibians, birds and mammals). 3 most popular invertebrates pets are:

Beetles are a group of insects which have the largest number of species. They are placed in the order Coleoptera, which means "sheathed wing" and contains more described species than in any other order in the animal kingdom, constituting about twenty-five percent of all known life-forms. Forty percent of all described insect species are beetles (about 350,000 species), and new species are frequently discovered. Estimates put the total number of species, described and undescribed, at between 5 and 8 million.

Beetles can be found in almost all habitats, but are not known to occur in the sea or in the polar regions. They interact with their ecosystems in several ways. They often feed on plants and fungi, break down animal and plant debris, and eat other invertebrates. Some species are prey of various animals including birds and mammals. Certain species are agricultural pests, such as the Colorado potato beetle Leptinotarsa decemlineata, the boll weevil Anthonomus grandis, the red flour beetle Tribolium castaneum, and the mungbean or cowpea beetle Callosobruchus maculatus, while other species of beetles are important controls of agricultural pests. For example, coccinellidae ("ladybirds" or "ladybugs") consume aphids, scale insects, thrips, and other plant-sucking insects that damage crops.

Tarantula is the common name for a group of "hairy" and often very large spiders belonging to the family Theraphosidae, of which approximately 900 species have been identified. Tarantulas hunt prey in both trees and on the ground. All tarantulas can emit silk, whether they be arboreal or terrestrial species. Arboreal species will typically reside in a silken "tube web", and terrestrial species will line their burrows or lairs with web to catch wandering prey. They mainly eat insects and other arthropods, using ambush as their primary method. The biggest tarantulas can kill animals as large as lizards, mice, or birds. Most tarantulas are harmless to humans, and some species are popular in the exotic pet trade while others are eaten as food. These spiders are found in tropical and desert regions around the world.

The name tarantula comes from the town of Taranto in Italy and was originally used for an unrelated species of European spider. (See Wolf spider for more information about this spider). In Africa, Theraphosids are frequently referred to as "baboon spiders". Asian forms are known as "earth tigers" or "bird spiders". Australians refer to their species as "barking spiders", "whistling spiders," or "bird spiders". People in other parts of the world also apply the general name "mygales" to Theraphosid spiders.

There are other species also referred to as tarantulas outside this family; the evolution of the name Tarantula is discussed below. This article primarily concerns the Theraphosids.

Scorpions are eight-legged arthropods. A member of the Arachnida class and belonging to the order Scorpiones, there are about 2000 species of scorpions. They are found widely distributed south of 49° N, except New Zealand and Antarctica. The northern-most part of the world where scorpions live in the wild is Sheerness on the Isle of Sheppey in the UK, where a small colony of Euscorpius flavicaudis has been resident since the 1860s.

The cuticle makes a tough armor around the body. In some places it is covered with hairs that act like balance organs. An outer layer that makes them fluorescent green under ultraviolet light is called the hyaline layer. Newly molted scorpions do not glow until after their cuticle has hardened. The fluoresent hyaline layer can be intact in fossil rocks that are hundreds of millions of years old.
